Adam Catzavelos Biography; Case, Sentence, Wife, Family Business

Adam Catzavelos is a South African entrepreneur who is the head of St. Georges Fine Foods, a sauce company which was founded by his father, George Catzavelos in 1968. He took over the reins in 2003, with his brother Nicholas. Adam also owns The Smoke House Grill in Fourways, Johannesburg.

Adam Catzavelos Biography

Adam was born on December 28, 1978. He became popular in 2018 when a video of him surfaced and went viral on social media. In the video, he expressed his pleasure at the absence of Black people using a K-word. Most South Africans attacked him and called him out for using such words. The video was posted on Twitter on August 21, 2018, and a day after, he was fired from his family business after issuing a statement. Some social media users also called for Nike to be boycotted because his Kelly Catzavelos is a merchandising director at Nike. However, Nike also disassociated itself from the scandal.

Adam Catzavelos Case

In the 22 seconds video, Adam records himself on a Greek beach where he blatantly uses the racist k-word to celebrate the fact that he was on a beach full of whites with no black on sight. He faced legal charges on May 2019, based on social media campaigns by anti-racist individuals and groups. The red berets (anti-racist group) placed a legal complaint against Adam in Bramley Police Station. A crimen injuria case was opened against him and the South Africa Human Right Commission also fined him R15 000.

Adam Catzavelos Sentence

Adam got a suspended sentence of 5 years from the Randburg Magistrate court. Before his sentence, Catzavelos had to apologise publicly over his racist comments and do community service at the Seth Mazibuko Foundation in Orlando, Soweto. After his service, Adam told the court, he has learned that black South Africans are very forgiving towards white people.

Adam Catzavelos Wife

Adam’s wife is Kelly Catzavelos. She works with the sports gear manufacturer, Nike as a merchandising director. She was harshly attacked by social media users and even called for Nike to be boycotted.

Adam Catzavelos Family Business

St. Georges Fine Foods is a family business headed by Adam and his brother Nicholas. His father George founded the company in 1968 but Adam assumed the position in 2003. After the video went viral, some South Africans boycotted their services. This affected the business significantly. The other family venture, “The Smokehouse and Grill” was also hugely affected. According to reports, his parents left the country after the video hit the internet.
