Rice died of complications from a stroke on December 11, 2021. She was 80 years old. Her death was originally revealed on her Facebook page by her son Christopher, followed by a message on her Twitter account.

Before her final dead, she nearly died once after falling into a coma on December 14, 1998, which was later confirmed to be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

She was later diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and became insulin-dependent. Rice got gastric bypass surgery in 2003, following her husband’s advice and shortly after his death. She lost 103 pounds.

Rice nearly died again in 2004 due to an intestinal blockage or bowel obstruction, which is a typical side effect of gastric bypass surgery. “[Rice] came close to death last year, when she had surgery for an intestinal blockage, and also back in 1998, when she went into a sudden diabetic coma,” Newsweek wrote in 2005.
