Sir Ludwig Guttmann was a highly respected German-British neurologist who established the Stoke Mandeville Games, the sporting event for people with disabilities that evolved into the Paralympic Games, in England. He was born on July 3, 1899, in Toszek, Poland, and died on March 18, 1980, in Aylesbury, the United Kingdom at the age of 81. Ludwig Guttmann was survived by two children; Eva Loeffler and Dennis Guttmann. His Daughter, Eva Loeffler, was appointed as the Mayor of the Paralympic Village by London 2012.
Sir Ludwig was asked by the British Government to found the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital to help World War Two veterans rehabilitating from spinal cord injuries Several years later after he fled Nazi Germany to England in 1939.
