Bananarama is an English female pop music vocal trio founded in London in 1979 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. The group’s first album, Bananarama, was released in 1979. As a result of their success on the pop and dance charts, the group was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the all-female group with the most number of chart entries in the world, a distinction that they still retain to this day. It was in 1981 that they published their first song, “Aie a Mwana.”
It is estimated that they had 28 hits in the Top 50 of the UK singles chart between 1982 and 2009. They had ten UK Top 10 singles, including “It Ain’t What You Do…” (#4 1982), “Really Saying Something…” (#5 1982), “Shy Boy” (#4 1982), “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” (#5 1983), “Cruel Summer” (#8 1983), “Robert De Niro’s Waiting…” (#3 1984), and “Love in the First Degree” (#3 1987). In 1986, they had another UK Top 10 success with “Venus,” which peaked at number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In all, they had 11 songs that reached the top 100 of the US Billboard Hot 100 from 1982 to 1988, with “Cruel Summer” (#9 in 1984) and “I Heard a Rumour” (#4 in 1987) both reaching the top ten. They are linked with the Second British Invasion of the United States, which was fueled by MTV. In 1988, their single “Love in the First Degree” got them a nomination for a Brit Award for Best British Single, and their fourth studio album Wow! (1987) debuted at the top of the Australian album chart.
Following Fahey’s departure from the group in 1988, Jacquie O’Sullivan joined the group for three years, during which time they had UK Top 10 success with the singles “I Want You Back” (#5 in 1988) and “Help!” (#3 in 1989), respectively. The band is also renowned for its vocal style, which is usually unison rather than in harmony, as opposed to other vocal groups. In addition to their chart success, they are also noted for their vocal style. Continuing Bananarama as a pair since 1992, their successes include “Movin’ On” (#24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992) and “More, More, More” (#24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993). After 12 years, they had their first UK Top 40 success with the songs “Move in My Direction” (#14) and “Look on the Floor (Hypnotic Tango)” (#26), which peaked at #14 and #26 respectively. The latter also peaked at number two on the Billboard Dance Chart in the United States.
