In the United States, Lisa Thomas-Laury (born July 19, 1954) works as a news anchor in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area. Ms. Thomas-Laury began her career at WPVI-TV in Philadelphia on February 20, 1978, as a co-anchor and reporter for the noon news broadcast. The next year, she was elevated to co-host the 5 p.m. broadcast alongside now-retired news anchor Marc Howard, which she did until 2003. At the same time, she often filled in for Jim Gardner on the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts when he was unable to do so due to illness. 

She has also been on the monthly Fast Forward series, a programme targeted at adolescents that is now hosted by Rick Williams; she has also appeared on the show. Vernon Odom has stepped down as host of the African-American-oriented, locally-produced Visions show (now known as New Visions), which she has taken over. Additionally, it is speculated that Thomas-Laury served as an influence for the character “Maria” from the Guess Who? board game series. Despite the fact that she disputes the notion, she has confessed to acting as a model for the artist of the famous video game. 

It is entirely coincidence, she maintains, that the two events are connected. In the Philadelphia market, Thomas-Laury is among a small group of African American women anchors that includes her fellow WPVI anchors Tamala Edwards and Shirleen Alicott, WCAU anchor Renee Chenault-Fattah, KYW anchor Natasha Brown, and WTXF anchor Joyce Evans. Thomas-Laury is the daughter of a former WPVI anchor and a former WPVI reporter.
