Known as Marty, Martin Baron is an American writer who has served as editor of The Washington Post since December 31, 2012. Prior to that, he served as editor of The Boston Globe from July 2, 2001 until December 31, 2012. Baron was born in 1954 in Tampa, Florida, and received his bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University. He is descended from Jewish ancestors. Baron started his journalism career in 1976 with The Miami Herald, then went on to The Los Angeles Times in 1979 and finally The New York Times in 1996. In 2000, he rejoined the Herald as executive editor, where he oversaw coverage of a number of significant events, including Elian Gonzalez’ return to Cuba and the 2000 presidential election. 

Baron’s tenure as editor of the Boston Globe, when he replaced Matthew V. Storin, saw the paper’s coverage of worldwide events change to a focus on locally based investigative journalism and reporting. The Boston Globe’s coverage of the Boston Catholic sexual abuse crisis resulted in the publication receiving a Pulitzer Award. It was reported on November 13, 2012, by The Washington Post and the Globe and Mail that Baron will take over as executive editor of the Post effective December 31, 2012. Baron replaces Marcus Brauchli, who has taken on a new position as vice president of The Washington Post Company, where he will be responsible for reviewing and evaluating new media initiatives.
