He was born on October 7, 1973, in Chicago, Illinois, and was a professional American football running back who played eleven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was a member of the University of Texas football team throughout his undergraduate years. In 1997, the Baltimore Ravens signed him as an undrafted free agent after he went undrafted in the previous year. In Super Bowl XXXV, Holmes and the Baltimore Ravens were awarded a championship ring. After rushing for just over 2,000 yards in four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, Holmes had a breakout season with the Kansas City Chiefs after signing as a free agent with the team the following year. Over the course of his seven-year career with the Chiefs, Holmes was a three-time All-Pro pick, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, and the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2002, among other honours.
Holmes was forced to miss the 2006 season due to a neck injury, and after a short return effort in 2007, he decided to retire from professional football. Besides the University of Texas Hall of Honor, Holmes was inducted into the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
