James, who was on the wheel of the school’s van, was heading back from the golf tournament along with 8 students. 6 student golfers died in an accident while 2 students are hospitalized at the University Hospital in Lubbock.
The school van crashed with the pickup truck leaving both driver and passenger of the pickup truck dead.

Tyler James was the head golf coach for the University of Southwest’s Men’s and Women’s golf teams. He was appointed as a head coach in 2021.
Entering his first season as a head coach, James had the experience of serving as a coach for years. Once a player for Ottawa University and Howard Payne University, James had started his coaching career at the Brownwood High School in Texas.
Later, he served as an assistant coach for the Men’s and Women’s golf teams at Howard Payne University.
Prior to joining the University of Southwest, James had spent 2 years as a Graduate Assistant Coach at East Texas Baptist University.
As for his academic qualifications, Tyler James earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Howard Payne University and Master’s of Science in Kinesiology from East Texas Baptist University.

The college’s van, which Coach James was driving, collided head-on with a pickup truck Dodge 2500 on Tuesday at 8:15 p.m.
The accident occurred after the pickup truck drove into the northbound lane and struck the college van leaving 9 people dead. 7 are from the University while 2 people are from the truck.
The crash occurred on a 2-land road about 9 miles away from the city of Andrews. The accident is under investigation.
