It was his distinctive stand-up act, which consisted mostly of stories about a cast of imaginary pals, the most renowned of which were “Everard” and “Slack Alice,” that established him as a stand-up legend. He is often referred to be one of the first openly homosexual performers to achieve widespread popularity, despite the fact that he never made any clear references to his sexual orientation. He was dedicated to his hometown of Nuneaton, where a museum exhibit related to his life and work, as well as a monument, have been erected in his honour.
